In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king
That’s an important lesson that I learnt early on in business – that you don’t necessarily have to be the best, you just have to be GOOD ENOUGH.
See, most people think that they’re not qualified to give advice, or to teach, or to help others – or in some cases, run a business
They think to themselves “I don’t think I can do this”
“I’m nobody…who is going to listen to me and give me time of day”
“Who would ever buy from me? There are so many more well established competitors out there”
These are the usual responses when I sit down with people who want to take the plunge and start their first business.
But when I dug deeper – I’m usually surprised to see that they have great skills and are pretty good at what they do.
Which mystifies me – why do they think they’re not qualified enough?
Because chances are, you’re BETTER than what you give yourself credit for.
Example – My good friend came to me and told me that he had enough of the working world, and wanted to start his own business.
So we sat down, brainstormed a couple of profitable business ideas for him, when I realized that he’s currently working as a content marketer for a marketing company.
As we discussed more, I was amazed – as part of his job, he has worked closely and written articles for some of the top CEOs, Managing Directors, Presidents of huge multi-national corporations.
Writing content articles for these guys is not for newbie freelance writers – expectations are very very high and massive research is needed to create the highest calibre of content articles.
And he’s worked for not one or two, but dozens of high profile clients – each of them paying a hefty monthly retainer of $5,000 upwards.
But when I told him to pursue content writing as a business, his first response was “can I even do it?”
He’s pretty good at what he does, but in his mind he’s probably thinking that he has to be the best before offering this service to clients.
But after some exploring, he realized that he was indeed GOOD ENOUGH to offer this service to clients
So we came up with a retainer deal of $1000 – $3000/month for him to design, create and implement content for clients.
Here’s the best part – within just a few days of going into business, he already has a number of enquiries with business owners to see how they can work together with him.
This wouldn’t have happened if he had sat back and thought to himself “I’m not good enough”
So guys, remember this – to get started, you dont necessarily have to be the best at what you do.
You just have to be GOOD ENOUGH.
